As part of the sewage renewal in the village centre of Cuijk the Grotestraat will be opened up and excavated in September. The Grotestraat is located where 2000 years ago a Roman street crossed right through the Roman settlement (the vicus). Previous examinations have indicated that there were Roman houses on both sides of the street, including workshops of which possibly the front was a shop. Thus it seems dat we are dealing with the oldest shopping street of the Netherlands here! The preparations for the excavations in September include setting up an overview of the old excavations in order to clarify which theories there are, which information we still miss, and how we should go about finding the right information while excavating.
